Feeding themselves and their young. (Whereas cats on the other hand.......🙈🐥). This female caused a rucous in the garden among the crows and gulls, and then fed on its prize. It returned the following day to the smae spot for another snack.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6ArLSBMMf_-K3mFKVOp-9vQVSiILuBX-T474s4gGPO3Wx2RCzcACx7HwINCtmZr-kFP-MnBgxs7YaTWaa5FMNRlj_UqnkkEVR12Zeb6C8ewKEg3HVdkd3xZvY6fqXRicZPffYtGnPrdU/s1980/sparrowhawk-0622-2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1980" data-original-width="1980" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6ArLSBMMf_-K3mFKVOp-9vQVSiILuBX-T474s4gGPO3Wx2RCzcACx7HwINCtmZr-kFP-MnBgxs7YaTWaa5FMNRlj_UqnkkEVR12Zeb6C8ewKEg3HVdkd3xZvY6fqXRicZPffYtGnPrdU/w640-h640/sparrowhawk-0622-2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDYBuNRuxuJ5J1Z52wNxGEftzxNN3qiRQ2smBGH-feUYA8rOtYx2GY8avuyySG6dtQZUdpZZR4Igtbxlq2zmCyW5G-rJK8RbuET6Vp2CHKpRvXu9hr0_f-mVYudW0TsEf8bsgpHe1Q3Eg/s1980/sparrowhawk-0776.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1980" data-original-width="1037" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDYBuNRuxuJ5J1Z52wNxGEftzxNN3qiRQ2smBGH-feUYA8rOtYx2GY8avuyySG6dtQZUdpZZR4Igtbxlq2zmCyW5G-rJK8RbuET6Vp2CHKpRvXu9hr0_f-mVYudW0TsEf8bsgpHe1Q3Eg/s16000/sparrowhawk-0776.jpg" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOruvj7VfJgDa-Kyel7rnU0sK0Ze42xBccMN-cvdumfxbeAG4wTVQQOB9m7Y-HTugi72cgrIiCKj9108cgpRdyeGXSIbJZypSg7D-xGNk4WjPqqMto7p2IF5s-MhpzZmF2whJX5UVy-xI/s1980/sparrowhawk-0753-2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1980" data-original-width="1319" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOruvj7VfJgDa-Kyel7rnU0sK0Ze42xBccMN-cvdumfxbeAG4wTVQQOB9m7Y-HTugi72cgrIiCKj9108cgpRdyeGXSIbJZypSg7D-xGNk4WjPqqMto7p2IF5s-MhpzZmF2whJX5UVy-xI/w426-h640/sparrowhawk-0753-2.jpg" width="426" /></a></div><br />Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2161577757474844889.post-36034381001277476362021-03-04T15:27:00.003+00:002021-03-04T15:30:01.354+00:00Wintering Redshanks<p><span style="background-color: white;">The photos show r</span><span face=""Segoe UI Historic", "Segoe UI", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif" style="background-color: white; color: #050505; font-size: 15px; white-space: pre-wrap;">edshanks at Nairn harbour, along wth some turnstones in the final pic. Keep checking the trees as small flocks of them fly into the garden. They appear hesitant as they fly overhead looking for a perch, then crowd in to a tree. If you have berries on your trees - particularly Rowan trees - they will love your garden!</span></p><p><span style="background-color: white; color: #050505; font-family: "Segoe UI Historic", "Segoe UI", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space: pre-wrap;">The first photo shows what they look like from a distance (Redwing and fieldfare). was unusually on its own along the River Nairn this afternoon, gathering food, probably for its young. Most

I've only just looked at the photos and picked these two: the one with the bird’s back to camera showing its yellow and red markings (not the berry getting in the way!) illustrates why they are called waxwings; and the second photo shows how they acrobatically twist upside down to get to the berries! Oh and by the way, the local sparrowhawk is regularly hunting around the garden hoping for a colourful meal!</span><br />

Redwings and Fieldfare arrive around this time of year from the continent, but so too do a large number of Blackies and Robins. Here's a few pics from my garden - note the redness under the wing and the eyestripe of the Redwing, and the grey (ish) head of the Fieldfare.</span><br />

Some are still raring their young (probably 2nd or 3rd broods). For some the journey starts earlier this month, but others can hang around until October. UK birds travel as far as South Africa and Namibia on a six week journey that takes them over France, Spain and Morocco and then the Sahara Desert and the Conga rainforest!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"></span><br />

<span style="font-family: inherit;">They are daytime flyers covering around 320km (200miles) each day, and roost in large flocks in their traditional stop over spots in reed-beds at night. Luckily the swallow hasn't got to fatten up before they set off as they feed on the wing, catching flying insects.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">(Thanks to the RSPB for the info).</span><br />

It's been pottering around gardens by the cemetry for a few days now, mixing with the other birds around the gardens. This is the 12th sighting in Moray and Nairn since records began; that sounds pretty rare to me!<br />
<br />
I couldn't get to where it was showing, so well done Kate for such a good, clear photo. I did manage to see it on a telegraph wire. That was good enugh for me!<br />
